I'm currently reading this book called Beautiful Uncertainty by Mandy Hale. I am in love with this book! (And let's be honest, I'm reading several books at the moment and this is still my favorite.) One of the things she talks about doing is having a vision board. And I thought, "what a great idea!" (like I often do). So I got myself a nice sized dry erase board at Wal-Mart with some cute little colored dry-erase markers (because we all know I can't just have black markers for this). And I sit down with the board and marker two weeks ago and man, was I excited! I just know that when I give this some thought and prayer that I will have a whole list of goals and things I would like to do. That's what I get for thinking ahead...
Once I sat down, turned off all of my distractions, read a few verses and started praying, I wrote down BE BRAVE. (Now, let me point out that the rest of the board is just white space other than a verse and the words BE BRAVE. I'm not really ok with that.) Be brave. I did write that in big, bold letters. But that's all I had. And I'm staring at it thinking, "Oh, come on. Just a few days ago I could think of all kinds of things I had visions for." But that really was it. Be brave. So I placed the vision board in one of the chairs in the living room and just left it there (along with the colorful pens, of course). I knew I'd come back to it with a lot of ideas.
But as of last night, there sat the vision board with just the verse and BE BRAVE written on it. And there I was, staring at it again. I sat down on the couch and started thinking about those words and what God was trying to tell me. It has been a complicated few weeks for me inside my head. (I'm an overthinker. If you know me, you already know that. And there have been some things I've been thinking about that have been driving me a little crazy.) I use the word complicated because if you were inside of my head, you would wonder how on earth I keep it all straight on a normal day, let alone the days that I'm overthinking everything! I wish I could draw for you what happens inside of my head. Maybe I will try one of these days but for now, I digress.
Be brave. Those words started to take shape in my head in the middle of all of the other sentences floating around inside my head. And I realized that this was something God had already been pushing me towards this year. He had asked me to step out of my comfort zone a few times. I won't get into how awkward that was for me! AHHHH!!! But in doing so, the world didn't blow up. My life didn't come to an end. All of those bad scenarios I had in my head did not happen. So stepping out of my comfort zone and being brave wasn't all that horrible. There have been other things over the last few months that have taken me out of my comfort zone and made me do things I wouldn't normally "be brave" enough to do. They didn't all turn out like I had hoped but nothing terrible happened. And honestly, most of them made me smile!
So there I was sitting on my couch being reminded that being brave didn't always mean something grand and wonderful was going to happen but it did mean it was better than nothing happening at all. And it meant that I was growing in my relationship with God and others as well. Hmmmm....
BE BRAVE. It began as just two words. It began as something that I thought wasn't big enough. But then God reminded me that it was big enough for Him.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, in your relationship with God.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, in your relationship with your friends.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, in your role in your church.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, in your role at work.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, in your relationship with your family.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, and follow your dreams.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, and know that sometimes it's ok to not be brave.
BE BRAVE, DEIDRA, in your personal life.
And the list goes on. I have a feeling this list will continue to grow. BE BRAVE. Those could be scary words if I let them be. Those words continue to move me out of my comfort zone and out of my own head. But those words also give me freedom. Freedom to allow God to do a work in me that He can't do if I don't let go. Freedom to be me, in all circumstances. Freedom to love, even when it's hard and when it hurts. Freedom to cry, because there is a time and place for that. Freedom to do the things that I may not think I can actually do, because with God, ALL things are possible.
Now that I think about it some more, maybe I'll add FREEDOM to my vision board...
